Mary Renouf

Mary Renouf  - Mary has been a regular Guest Teacher at The Jane Moore Academy of Ballet for many years and commenced teaching Full-time and Part-time Academy students from 2012.

Mary Renouf was classically trained in Melbourne by Kathleen Gorham O.B.E. and Eileen Tasker from the age of 5 to 15 years.  She then went to The Australian Ballet School for three years becoming the first student to be chosen to represent The Australian Ballet School in an International Ballet Competition that year held for the first time in the U.S. in Jackson, Mississippi.

Mary was an inaugural member of The Dancer’s Company (regional touring company of The Australian Ballet) in 1980, then graduated into The Australian Ballet.  After a period of time dancing in Australia Mary married fellow Australian Ballet dancer Adrian Fryer and together they left for Europe to broaden their experience.  They danced at the soloist and principal levels with the major ballet companies of Vienna, Klagenfurt (Austria), Kiel and Munich (Germany) working with many luminaries in the professional ballet world.  Mary has danced the full classical repertoire performing in all major classical ballets, E.g. Swan Lake, Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, La Sylphide, Sleeping Beauty, Onegin, Nutcracker, The Merry Widow, Les Sylphides, Carmen and many more.  Her career has seen her work with many incredible dancers, directors and choreographers such as Rudolf Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn, Ivan Nagy, Natalia Makarova, Peter Schaufuss, Youri Vamos, Joyce Cuoco, Dame Peggy Van Praagh, Anne Wooliams, Marilyn Jones O.B.E. and Ronald Hynd to name but a few.

Upon return to Australia Mary and Adrian opened their own Ballet School in South Gippsland but returned to Melbourne two years later.  Mary gave birth to their only child Eloise and commenced teaching at The National Theatre Ballet School in St Kilda.  After 7 years there they opened their own studio again, this time purely for adults called City Dance Centre in Armadale, Melbourne.  They sold this after 13 years of success to concentrate on their life in rural Victoria near Ballarat, balancing  teaching for several reputable Ballet Schools including Dance School of Distinction, Ballarat (formally Carole Oliver School of Ballet), The Jane Moore Academy of Ballet, Independent Dance Studios and Sharon Lawrence Academy of Dance in Melbourne.  Throughout her career Mary has adjudicated many dance eisteddfods in Australia and taught nationally and internationally.  She particularly loves to coach the finer points of technique, developing potential and artistry.

Eloise Fryer, Mary and Adrian’s daughter, was also taught by Jane Moore and followed a similar career path, becoming a professional dancer with The Australian Ballet.  She danced there for 9 years and now works as Artistic Coordinator for the Company.
